Erik’s departure

Erik putting the canoe into Lake Superior before departure.

A small group of family and friends gathered today at Grand Portage National Monument to say goodbye to Erik as he headed off on his 1000 mile Arrowhead Journey.  Originally the plan was to start on the Pigeon River at Grand Portage State Park, but the increasingly fragile ice, now covered with new snow, made that a bad idea today. Instead, he started on Lake Superior.

Well-wishers looked on as he carefully repitched his canoe’s seams before the journey.  Then he somehow packed an almost impossible amount of well-considered gear into the 13 foot canoe.

It was blustery when he left, but the lake was relatively calm.  He hopes to make it to Hovland this evening.
